Designed and released under the collection name African Crowns
The NENZIMA SERVER pays homage to queen Nenzima of the Mangbetu tribe who was the younger sister of the nineteenth-century ruler, Mbunza and the wife of Okondo, she was reported to be one of the most powerful people in the court in the first decade of the 20th century.
The overall shape, lines and form of the server along with the weaved detail elements are all inspired by the distinctive look of the elongated heads of most Mangbetu women at the time, resulting from the cultural practice of 'Lipombo’, which was a status symbol among the Mangbetu ruling class at the beginning of the century.
Along with the elongated head, the hairstyles accompanying the overall look was an oval/ funnel-shaped coiffure which ended in an outward halo, originally symbolic of the high social status which was considered exceptionally attractive and powerful hence the inclusion in The Urbanative's African Crowns Collection.
